about

The music for this song was originally written and recorded in Marc’s illegal attic apartment in Silverlake in 2009 as the first track of a concept album that taught the listener how to knit. It was originally called ‘Long Tail Cast On’, which is the first thing you need to learn when knitting a scarf. We unearthed this recording and having scrapped the knitting concept album, decided to find a new purpose for it, and a knitting how-to evolved into a mini-opera about criminal recidivism, incurable cycles of compulsive behavior, and the law of diminishing returns.

lyrics

The first time it felt right
I wanna do this every night
Can’t ever get that time back again
Don’t mean that I’ll stop searching for it

The first time blew your mind
They took your body the second time
Into a thousand pieces again
Into a thousand pieces again

Old wives tell lies
Needle in the right hand
Pistol in the left one
Two dollars in your palm
Up with the left thumb
Wrap around the backyard
Bring it back through the front
Hide it ‘til they’ve passed on

It’s just a dream you’re dying on
It’s just a dream
It’s just a dream
You checked out and left for gone
You checked out and nobody’s home

Old wives tell lies
Needle in the right hand
Pistol in the left one
Two dollars in your palm
Up with the left thumb
Wrap around the backyard
Bring it back through the front
Hide it ‘til they’ve passed on.

Up with the left thumb
Wrap you up in black tar
Can’t get to the phone
Hide it in your carry-on

Buckle up the the left thumb
Wrap you up in black tar
Hide it in your carry-on
Can’t get it where you’re going

I’ll do it always and never but I remember forever

Old wives tell lies
Needle in the right hand
Pistol in the left one
Two dollars in your palm

Up with the left thumb
Wrap around the backyard
Bring it back to the front
Hide it ‘til they’ve passed on

Buckle up the left thumb
Wrap you up in black tar
Can’t get to the phone
Hide it in your carry on

Buckle up the left thumb
Wrap you up in black tar
Hide it in your carry on
Can’t get it where you’re going
Can’t get it where you’re going
You checked out and left for gone
Can’t get it where you’re going

Heads are Heavy Los Angeles, California

After nearly a decade apart, Julie Edwards (Deap Vally, Deap Lips, Pity Party) and Marc Smollin (Pity Party, Say Fica) have reunited as Heads are Heavy, the kaleidoscopic culmination of a long, strange trip spanning Edwards and Smollin’s 30+ year friendship.

Embracing oblique strategies, Smollin and Edwards scavenge the sonic detritus of The Pity Party to create new, unexpected forms.
